Decker's military parents was based in Louisiana at the age of eighteen years old. She won an audition competition by singing the song Patsy Montana's I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart. Decker relocated to Georgia around the age of fifteen. She was writing her first songs and she was making regular trips to Nashville and making rounds of record labels and music publishers in search of a deal. When she was 17 when she was 17, the Big Yellow Dog Records representative saw her work and began to sell her tracks to labels and artists. The moment Mercury Records president David Massey saw the demos of Decker, he sent the songs on to L.A. Reid head of the affiliated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid signed her to an agreement with a record label. Her first album a self-titled album under the name Jessie James arrived in August 2009. Jessie James achieved a reasonable degree of success, with Wanted reaching at the Top 40 charts. Decker was always considered known as a "country" artist but this album is produced and marketed for a pop audience. Decker, who had been disappointed by two further singles from the album, fought with the top executives of the record label in search of more influence. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more than a country track. Decker's album, titled Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was canceled by Mercury after two singles failed to chart on the country charts.
